Restructuring and extension of the Wallon Marcadau Refuge (sleeps 120) located above the Pont d’Espagne in the town of Cauterets in the Hautes-Pyrénées, at an altitude of 1865 metres. The first refuge was built in 1910 and the last extension dates from 1963.
The reconstruction consists of enlarging the refuge on the mountain side, creating a wooden structure that covers the existing one through arched roof caissons with a stainless-steel cover. The vertical load bearing elements are made from existing granite walls, CLT sails and a glulam column/beam structure. The new floors are made of CLT.
A seismic design, for this inaccessible site which requires supply by heli-porting. A maximum reuse of materials on site is favored in particular the demolition blocks being used for the creation of a gabion wall.
