INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION FINALIST STUDIO GANG AND TEAM UNVEIL THEIR DESIGN TO TRANSFORM PARIS’ TOUR MONTPARNASSE

Studio Gang has unveiled their team’s second place-winning design to transform the Montparnasse Tower, the sole skyscraper within the periphery of Paris, into a shimmering landmark for the 21st century. Studio Gang was one of two finalists to advance to the final round of a multi-stage international competition, launched in June 2016, that set out the ambitious challenge “to create a powerful, dynamic, and bold new identity for the Tour Montparnasse, while fully addressing all modern challenges regarding user accessibility, comfort, and energy performance.” On September 19, 2017, the firm Nouvelle AOM was selected over Studio Gang as the winner of the competition.

“As Europe’s densest city, one of Paris’ biggest challenges is finding new sites for working and living space within the city limits. Our project proposes an ambitious solution that increases density and quality of life by re-sculpting the tower to expand its functionality and eliminate the current negative impacts of wind around the base of the tower. The rounded floor plan shape gives the building flexibility to accommodate new and varied uses in the future, while the façade’s bay windows create a texture that ameliorates windiness on the Place Raoul-Dautry. This plaza is transformed into a vibrant social space for dining, shopping, gathering, and relaxing within a new green urban landscape that blurs the boundary between indoors and out. On the interior, the bay windows have the added benefit of creating more than 1000 “belvederes” that give great views not just to executives, but to everyone who works in the tower. The self-shading of the bay windows, sustainable strategies, structural elements, and public spaces, from bottom to top, are combined into an elegant architectural expression that seamlessly integrates the highest levels of performance and becomes a shimmering landmark on par with the beauty of Paris.”
—Jeanne Gang, Founder and Principal, Studio Gang

Studio Gang led the design with support from local architecture firm Chabanne et Partenaires, structural and façade engineer Terrell Group, façade engineer Hugh Dutton Associates, and additional expert consultants from Paris and around the world. The team worked in close collaboration to ensure that their ambitious design could be achieved within the project budget and the many constraints of the site.

The team’s project transforms the existing monolithic skyscraper into a vibrant place that is simultaneously a hub for economic innovation, a center of community life, and a global model of sustainability. A new, faceted façade gives the building a shimmering silhouette that marks its presence in the Parisian landscape. A diverse mix of new uses and amenities, including public spaces, encourage social connection and creativity and support contemporary ways of working. In addition, the design’s synthesis of sustainable systems reduce the building’s current primary energy consumption by 89%, achieving an exemplary level of environmental performance commensurate with Paris’s leading role in the battle against climate change.

At the tower’s base, what is currently an uninviting and windy plaza is reimagined as a topography of gardens and pedestrian spaces that bring daylight and greenery into the building while accommodating a range of outdoor public activities. The tower’s transparent ground level provides a visible front door for its many programs, which include 50 floors of work space, an observatory with indoor garden, restaurants with terraces, a hotel, cafés, a co-working hub, retail, a gym, and conference center.

Inside, the facets of the new façade form bay windows that produce generous, flexible work spaces and gathering spaces that are filled with natural daylight and open up vistas of Paris. At its top, the building culminates in a glass pavilion that offers 360-degree views of the city. Supported by a steel corolla structure, this observatory houses a garden that gives a taste of the French terroir, as well as a théâtre de verdure that can host a variety of events. This airy space where people, nature, and culture mix is designed to be an ideal belvedere from which to watch Paris’s future unfold.

“The metamorphosis of the Montparnasse Tower is the result of a year-long exploration by a talented team of architects and engineers led by Studio Gang, united in our determination to change the state of the art, to question what has been achieved, to work together to open up the fields of vision, to see beyond what’s there today. The result is a design that transforms a disliked tower into a new icon for the future of Paris.”
—Clément Mansion, Associate Architect, Chabanne et Partenaires

“I would like to thank the Studio Gang team for giving us their confidence and allowing this competition for the Tour Montparnasse to be lived out as a unique and demanding experience based on trusting relationships between exceptional professionals and people.”
—Claude Labbé, Director, Terrell Group

Métropole du Grand Paris launched a wide call for projects, in collaboration with the Société du Grand Paris. The remarkable sites are given away by city councils, and teams are selected according to the novelty of their program. Thanks to all the proposition, it is possible already to conceive the future of the Métropole, considering the social, economic and green stake.
